(disclaimer: This guide does not excuse any poorly designed puzzles / paths of progress.) Try to avoid using this, unless you are really stuck. Part of the fun is finding out where to go and what to do (at least I hope it is). For the most part, there are two different paths to take. They may cross over each other, but for the most part can be done separately. They both end up at the same point in the end, but one is much more challenging than the other (in terms of monsters you'll fight, and figuring out how to progress if you don't use this walkthrough). Map names (not in order you visit): 1: Retreat 2: Gloam 3: Beached 4: Hallowed 5: Bosk 6: Height Beached: Both paths require doing the same first step, which is: The ax: -Before you can do anything else, you need a weapon. In the north-west clearing there is a stump with an ax in it. Just use the stump to get the ax. After this, the path splits up. At this point, whether you are doing the hard or easy route, you can go one of two ways. If doing the hard route, you need to at least go through path B until you get fire. ---Path A--- -After getting the ax, go out to the beach and swim towards the small island. There is an entrance to a cave which is hard to miss. At the bottom of the cave, there is a mostly dried up stream. Climb up the rocks to where the stream would be coming from, and you'll see a rock pillar with a crack in it. Hit the crack with the ax and the stream will fill with water. -Follow the stream until you reach another cave/room. Go down the drop off, and you'll soon be attacked by a cacodemon. You can't kill it. In the middle of the large room, there is a center pillar with 6 smaller pillars around it. The smaller pillars have cracks in them, so hit each one until it breaks. After the last one, get ready to run/swim out the way you came in. Go back to where the waterfalls are and look for a cave that has opened up along the west wall. Along the way through that cave, there will be an area with water and a small rock island in the middle. On the rock island there is an item to pick up; mushroom oil. This will be used much later on. -Exit the cave then go back to the small island. Once back there, go towards the east and swim down. You should see a small opening towards the bottom. Follow that path and you'll eventually change maps. ---Path B--- -In the largest clearing (the one with 4 pedestal things) to the north, there is a pool of water. In the water, there is a hole/cave you can swim through to reach an odd/old tree. If you have the ax, and press use on the tree branch, you'll get a stick as an item. -With the stick in hand, go to the eastern beach where there is a fire burning. Use the stick while being close to the fire and you will get fire as an item. -Go back to where you got the ax, and there is a path blocked by trees. Use the fire there to clear the way. After a small boss fight, a cave opens up and in there you get the death artifact. This item can be used anywhere you see a dead human body. Use the death artifact near the dead body around the drop off you jumped down. -East of the 6 pedestal clearing, there is a pit with fire at the bottom and a dead body on the edge. Use the death artifact here to open up the way to the next map. =================== ---The Easy Path--- =================== Gloam: -You'll be heading for the forest, which has two entrances. One entrance is in the north-east corner. The other is a bit north of the middle and you'll know you are close when you enter a forest like area with waterfalls. Bosk: -Around the forest there are beehives on branches. Hit the hives out of the tree and check if it dropped a key. If not, look for more hives. What hive the key is in is random, so try to find them all. -In the center of the map there is a large tree which you can enter. At the bottom, along the wall you'll see a small opening. Hit the opening with your ax until you can pass through. Go down inside and look for an odd looking bug in a small cave filled with mushrooms. The mushrooms will 'wake' up and attack you. Maybe the odd bug has a connection to mushrooms. -Once you have the leaf key, head for the door. This door is on the west side of them map. Head on through the cave until you get to a dark clearing. At a certain point, you'll be trapped in this area and a small cacodemon will attack you. Watch out for it, as it likes to jump out of the shadows. There are two ways to kill it, one is just hit until it dies, the other is by using the death artifact at one of the three bodies. The bodies require jumping to get to, and aren't easy to see, so just hitting the cacodemon might be easier. After it's dead, head to the cave in the south-east corner of the clearing. Just climb upwards and you eventually change maps again. Retreat: -At this point, you have multiple choices on where to go. The best thing to do is look for a weapon first. There is a chaingun directly west of where you exit the cave. And a shotgun on the other side of the map to the north. -Now that you have weapons, you are ready for the next task; finding 3 coins. Depending on what items you have found, you'll get your coins from different areas. I'll list the three that don't involve the other path through the game. *This one doesn't require any items. In the northwest area there is a hill with an entrance to a small cave. Inside, you'll see a tree with a coin inside of it. If you look around, you'll notice two holes in the wall (southwest and northeast corner). Hit a hole with your ax and prepare the fight the baron that comes out. After you kill it, it has a chance of causing a small earthquake which will shake the coin out of the tree. Pick it up. *The entrance to the cave which holds the next coin is on top of the largest hill. It's the one that has the shotgun alter at the base. On the top, you'll see a patch of moss with mushrooms on it. You'll need the odd bug for this. Stand in the middle of the mushrooms and use the odd bug. The entrances will reveal itself, so enter until you come across the coin. When you pick it up you be ambushed by a monster, kill it so you can escape. Height: *The last coin requires traveling to the next map. Head to the southwest corner and you should eventually find a large piece of rock hanging above a ledge you can't jump to. On the right side of the large hanging rock is a crack. Shoot the crack to open up the path to the next map. Explore the next map until you come across a large valley. Climb down by going to the south and you should eventually find a way to the bottom of the valley. If you change maps along the way, you went the wrong way. If you follow the valley, you should come across another cave, so go through it. The coin is in one of the corners in the area passed the cave. Retreat: -since both paths ultimately end up here, the easy walkthrough will continue after the hard walkthrough. =================== ---The Hard Path--- =================== Gloam: -Go to the cave just north of where you start (if you went the route past the fire pit). This cave has a ledge with dragon statues on it, also there is an alter with candles and some water. Swim down into the water until you are in a small cave with some ruins. Look for a crescent shaped emblem, then hit it with the ax You should now have the emblem. -Next, head to the forest. One entrance is just north of the cave you are in (after you swim back through the water). The other entrance is in the north-east corner. Bosk: -In the forest, there are three things to do. First off, head to the northern part in the middle of the map. You should find a panel similar to the one you found the emblem from. Place the emblem on the panel. This hatches eggs on the previous map. -In the center of the map there is a large tree which you can enter. At the bottom, along the wall you'll see a small opening. Hit the opening with your ax until you can pass through. Go down inside and look for an odd looking bug in a small cave filled with mushrooms. The mushrooms will 'wake' up and attack you. Maybe the odd bug has a connection to mushrooms. -Lastly, if you found and read the journal entry, you'll know the person who wrote the entry found a 'secret' area behind some bushes. Head to the eastern side of the map, then start heading through the southern path, but not too far. Along the wall to your right there should be a bunch of trees/bushes and section of wall you can walk through. Use the lever you find in the small bunker. -Now that you are done with this map, head back to Gloam. Gloam: -Walk to the beach area of the map (to the southwest, if you didn't know). Along the way you may encounter serpents. Kill them and they may drop a horn. Wander around the beach area and look for and kill serpents until you have two horns. There are three serpents, they are all in the beach area. -Head over to the large clearing section of the map, the area with the small pond. If you look around you'll notice the ground has opened in the area with the brick pillars. Swim down and find the entrance at the bottom of the hole. Climb upwards until you come to a room with a hole in the wall. There will be a cylinder sitting on an alter. Go near the alter to pick up the cylinder. -Now go to the cave in the center of the map. It's the cave with 'teeth' and a dragon statue which is missing it's horns. Use the horns on the statue and after you place the second one, it'll come alive. -After the fight, go back to the cave with the ledge and two statues on it. It's to the north-west, in case you need directions. You should notice the ceiling has collapsed and conveniently created stairs. Climb through the caves until you get to a map change. You'll now find yourself in... Retreat: -Just like the easy path, you have to find 3 coins to progress. This time the three coins needed for the hard path aren't as easy to get. -The best thing to do is look for a weapon first. There is a chaingun directly west of where you exit the cave. And a shotgun on the other side of the map to the north. -There is a small cave in the middle of the east side of the map. It can be easy to miss if you don't know where it is. If you find the high up ledge with the temple entrance on it, it is below that ledge where the cave is. Once inside, just follow the path until you find an alter with a cylinder on it. Take the cylinder. ---Coin 1--- *Near the middle on the west side of the map is a tower. Go to the top of the tower and stand in the middle pillar then use the fire item. It should start a fire and open up the basement. Head down and follow the path until you are in a cavern. Walk around until you find what seems to be a statue. Walk up to it, but be careful, as it awakens when you get close enough. Win the fight and and a barrier in the center of the chamber will lower. Pick up the coin and head back up through the tower. -The two other coin2 require traveling to the next map. Head to the southwest corner and you should eventually find a large piece of rock hanging above a ledge you can't jump to. On the right side of the large hanging rock is a crack. Shoot the crack to open up the path to the next map. Height: ---Coin 2--- -Go towards the northeast side of the map and you should find a small clearing past a cave. In the clearing is another cylinder, take it. -Head for the beach at the northwest side of the map. On the beach there is a path of circles which lead to a ledge. Go up to the ledge and you'll see a small shrine with three pillars. Using all the cylinders, place them on the pillars in the correct order. After doing this, you can swim out to the large pillar in the water and grab the coin there. ---Coin 3--- -Stay in the beach area and walk over to the pond to the west. Swim down to the bottom until you pick up a handle. Swim back up. -Travel to the southeast corner of the map and find the path that leads back to Beached. Beached: -Before jumping into the ocean water, be sure to step on the pillar in the cracked earth to open up the shortcut. Go back to the clearing where you found the ax Jump up onto the ledge with mushrooms on it and use the odd bug. Kill the large mushroom in the middle and a path will open a few steps to the west. In this small cave you'll find the head of a pick ax You should have an assembled pick-ax now. Go back to Height. Height: -In a cave in the center of the map, there is a strange glowing rock. Use the pick-ax on the rock to break a piece off. Now go to the lack to the north. Throw the stone in and fight whatever comes out. After the battle and the lake is clear again, you can swim out to the island in the middle and pick up the last coin. Now go back to Beached. Beached: -Go to the middle of the north end of the map. To the area with 4 pedestals. You should notice something different about this area. Go into the portal and fight whatever is inside. After the fight, exit and head back to Retreat. ======================== ---The Paths Converge--- ======================== Retreat: -To the southwest, in the area of the waterfalls, there is a panel with three circle slots. Guess what you need to do here. After you have placed the coins, the building's doors will open, so go inside. -There are two paths through here. Only one can be taken if you have the mushroom oil. ---Path A--- -If you go towards the northwest side of the map, you should end up in a small room with pipes and a valve on one of them. Use the valve and you'll take it. Go back down the stairs and enter the first doorway on the right. Go down the ramp and enter the cave. You'll find yourself in the basement. Just follow the path until you get to some pipes. Use the valve on the little nub sticking out of the pipes, then activate the valve. -Head back upstairs and go to the southern part of the map. Don't go outside, but in the area with the doors to outside (the outside area being the one with the chess-set). You may notice that the water in this area is now gone and a door opened up. Follow the path through the door and head north. You'll end up at an archvile which you have to fight to get by the barrier. Both paths end up here. ---Path B--- -Go to the southern area of the map. This area has a bridge that is too high too reach. There is a room to the west that has a lever in it, but the lever is stuck. Use the mushroom oil on the lever then use the lever. It lowers the bridge. -Go over the bridge, then down the stairs until you find another lever. Use this lever as well, then head back up the stairs. The lever raises some stairs so you can now see into the garden. Look around and you'll see a key, press use to pick it up. -Head up the middle of the map towards the north and you should end up at a door with a lock next to it. Press use on the keyhole and the door will open if you have the key. Continue heading north until you come to the archvile. ---Final stretch--- -There isn't much to this area, and it's all downhill from here. You come to an area with 2 or 3 cacodemons. You'll be assaulted by them. You'll notice three pillars, two of which have a small monster statue on them. Go down towards the beach until you find a third monster statue. Place the little statue on it's pedestal and you'll clear the cacodemons. Head back towards the beach and enter the boat to finish your little adventure.
